KINGSVILLE A 1-year-old girl died Wednesday in a hot car in Kingsville, police said.

Officers responded about 5 p.m. to the 200 block of East Fairview Street where a mother had left her daughter in a vehicle parked in a driveway for about 45 minutes, according to a news release.

The mother just had returned home from picking her children up, said Kingsville Police Chief Ricardo Torres.

The temperature was 91 degrees at the time police were called, and the heat index was 102, police reported.

A neighbor attempted to revive the girl. Rescuers performed CPR before the girl was pronounced dead at Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg.

The investigation will be turned over to the district attorney, and child protective services was contacted.

She is the fourth child in Texas to die in a hot vehicle this year and the 13th in the nation, according to statistical research by Certified Consulting Meteorologist Jan Null at San Francisco State University. Last year 33 children died in hot vehicles nationwide, Null reported. Six were in Texas. Since 1998, at least 457 infants and children have died in hot vehicles in the U.S. and 62 of them were in Texas. Null's research is updated online at ggweather.com/heat/.

"Parents need to be aware of their children's locations during the hottest time of the year," Torres said in the news release. "A child is in danger if in a vehicle for just a few minutes."
