Boy, 3, succumbs to heat
Police Friday confirmed they are investigating the death of a three-year-old boy Wednesday night.
Del Rio Police Department Capt. Antonio Becerra, who heads the department’s criminal investigations division, said Friday police patrol officers were dispatched to the emergency room at Val Verde Regional Medical Center “in regards to a suspicious death.”
Becerra said police were dispatched to the hospital at 8:13 p.m. Wednesday after being notified by emergency medical service personnel about the toddler’s death.
“This was a heat-related death,” Becerra said, “And police officers were called to the hospital after (the boy) was found in a family vehicle at home.”
Becerra said it is impossible to know exactly how long the child was in the car before he died, but said it was three hours from the time the boy was last seen alive to the time he was found inside the vehicle. Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Joey Gonzalez said Friday the three-year-old boy was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday. Gonzalez said he has ordered an autopsy, which will be performed at the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office in Laredo.
Becerra said although there were no obvious signs of foul play, “we won’t know exactly how he died until the autopsy report comes back.” Becerra said no arrests have been made in connection with the investigation.
Becerra said DRPD Detective Michael Fuentes is heading the investigation into the death.
