Coroner identifies babies found wrapped in bags; children reportedly left in car all day

HANAHAN — The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified the two children whose bodies were found wrapped in trash bags beneath a kitchen sink inside an efficiency apartment Monday night.

Shawn Campbell, 4, and Triniti Campbell, 1, were found by Hanahan Police officers around 7:30 p.m. at The Willows at 1824 Remount Road, Berkeley County Deputy Coroner George Oliver said this morning.

Oliver said an autopsy will be done today to determine the cause of death. He said they can only speculate at this point how long the children have been dead. “Hopefully the autopsy will narrow that down,” he said.

The Associated Press is reporting Sametta Heyward had taken her children to work Monday in downtown Charleston and left them in her car all day as the temperature outside rose to 88 degrees. Heyward has been taken to Trident Hospital for evaluation.

Hanahan Police Lt. Michael Fowler said officers were dispatched to the apartment complex to respond to a disturbance call. No mention of children was made in the emergency call.

When officers arrived, one of them overheard a conversation that led him to further investigate Apartment 24.
