Second child from PG dies

A second child from Prince George has died following an incident last weekend.

On Thursday, shortly after 12:30 p.m., Jade Downing, a 2-month-old girl, was pronounced dead at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond.

Around 6 p.m on Sunday, Prince George Police responded to the 4600 block of Bailey Bridge Lane to a call for a unresponsive child. Upon arriving at the scene, the rescue squad tried to revive the child but efforts were unsuccessful and it was determined that the child had died, according to Capt. Eric Young with the Prince George County Police Department.

The 20-month-old who died at the scene was Jelani A. Downing-Batson.

Brittney Downing, the childrenís mother, was charged with two counts of felony child neglect on May 28. The Henrico Police Departmentís investigation is currently centered around events that occurred on May 26 at a hotel in the 1600 block of Telegraph Road in Glen Allen, according to a statement released by the Henrico County Police Department.

At this time, the cause of death for both children is still unknown and there are no updates on the charges.

Young said when Prince George County Police Department responded to the call on Sunday, the residence was tested for carbon monoxide. He said this was just as a precaution and to determine if it can ruled out as a possible cause of death. Young said the meters used for testing came back with a negative readings on both the apartment and the adjacent apartments.

Funeral arrangements have been made with J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment in Petersburg.

A funeral is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Living Word World Outreach Center, 1221 Boulevard, Colonial Heights.

Brittney Downing is the daughter of two local pastors, Stephen and Pamela J. Downing of Colonial Heights. They are pastors at Victorious Christian Living Ministries in Hopewell. The church is located in off Oaklawn Boulevard, not far from where Brittney Downing lives.
